Aston Tirrold and Upthorpe Village Hall A potted history
Our village hall stands on land bought by public subscription in 1945 as part of Winston Churchill's post war village hall programme, whereby government matched locally raised funds. A Nissen hut was placed on the land while the villages continued to raise funds for a permanent building. However in 1963 a local resident, Paulise Lugg, founder of an amateur dramatics society "The Stockwell Players" (now the Blewbury Players) donated the present building. It was designed by the architect George Zukic and opened by the local MP, Airey Neave, in September 1964. In 1997 a Millennium Project was drawn up to extend the hall giving it a ground floor store room and improved access facilities. This work was funded by monies from the Community Fund of the National Lottery, South Oxfordshire District Council's Community Trust Fund, Aston Tirrold and Upthorpe Parish Councils, and a generous legacy from a village resident. The hall was re-opened by Robin Sewell, one of the original Stockwell Players. Since then the hall has continued to improve its facilities, and has enjoyed an influx of new clubs and uses. The hall is a registered charity, and is run by a management committee representing the various clubs and organisations of the village, together with individual members.
